The Maranatha Boys Cross Country Team Look to Improve on Last Years Success

By: Matthew Leiva

This year the Boys Cross Country team is ready to improve on last years success.  Last year the team was coached by Mr. Noble who had previously coached in Arizona.  The Minutemen really came together under their new coach and the team looks to improve on their success.

The Boys’ Cross Country team finished last year placing 11th in CIF for division five.  This year they will be led by senior Matthew Rutzen,, who ran his personal best time of 16:17.2 and earned him 21st place in CIF last year.  Along with Matthew Rutzen, the team has his fellow seniors Henry Witherspoon, Emi Rivas, and Nick Camonte returning.  While the Boys Cross Country team will be without their two captains from last year, Eli Rodarte and Nick Demonteverde, four of their top seven runners will be returning.  When talking to Matthew Rutzen about his performance and the team’s performance last year he said, “No one expected us to make it this far, let alone go all the way to finals.  We missed our mark of where we were trying to be, but placing 11th overall out of the 125 teams in the southern section is pretty astounding from a seemingly new team”.

This year’s team hopes to have another great season.  Many of the runners expect this team will build off of last years success.  Their goal as a team is to continue to do well and to glorify God while they are running.  The Boys Cross Country team will be having their first meet this evening at the Rose Bowl and look to start the season off well.
