Game Recap

Sophomore guard, Patil Yacoubian lead the Lady Minutemen in scoring with 26 points and seven steals before picking up her fourth foul late in the game and having to sit most of the fourth quarter. Freshman shooting guard Emily Jordan added 12 points and three assists in her high school debut, while senior point guard Cherise Masuda contributed eight points and five steals before getting into early foul trouble and having to sit for long stretches of the game. Freshman center Mikayla Murphy made her presence felt with eight points and five rebounds but it was Coach Smalley’s “Bench Mob” that sparked the team with a second quarter surge that had the Monrovia High Tuesday night crowd on their feet. “Our Freshman twins, Hope Hayashida and Talinana Marganian were fantastic off the bench and gave us electrifying energy. Mireille “Big Red” Minassian sizzled off the bench some big plays as well,” said Coach Smalley. All 11 players scored and the team was able to start their season off with a win on the road. The Lady Minutemen will face a tough Glendale team in the first round of the San Marino Tournament next Monday at 7:30 PM.

Meet Recap

For the third time in the last four years, Maranatha played in the CIF-SS Div. 5 playoffs (MHS was in Div. 4 last season), reaching at least the semi-finals each time. In 2014, they won the CIF-SS Div. 5 title. In 2015, they lost in the semis, 9-9. 2017 turned out to be deja vu as the Lady Minutemen lost 9-9 once again.

The similarities of this match to the 2015 semi-final match were uncanny. Both times Maranatha came in as the #1 seed and faced the #4 seed from large public schools in north Orange County. Both times Maranatha held a 4-2 lead after the first round. Both times the score was 6-6 after two rounds. Both ended in 9-9 ties, with MHS coming up just short on games.

Today’s semi-final was a heavyweight match-up between the only two teams who have held the #1 ranking in Div. 5 this season. It was a back and forth affair, with Orange starting off, 2-0. Maranatha then reeled off four straight sets, with Angela Hsieh and Malena Smith winning in singles and Maddie Hernandez/Michael Wilkins and Reagan Atallah/Aria Haver-Hill winning in doubles. The Lady Panthers went on their own run to start the second round, pulling ahead, 5-4, before Hernandez/Wilkins tied it up at 5-5. Two of Orange’s doubles sets were won, 6-0, which would prove costly for the Lady Minutemen in the end.

All eyes turned to the final two sets of the second round, with Hsieh and Smith both engaged in dog fights, 4-4 and 5-5 respectively. Smith’s match ended first, with Smith narrowly losing in a tie-breaker, 6-7, in an epic battle, and giving Orange a 6-5 lead. Hsieh finally prevailed in easily the longest set of the day, 7-5, tying the score at 6-6.

The final round of play opened with Orange’s #1 doubles and Hsieh each producing off-setting 6-0 victories. Orange’s #1 singles won next, 6-0, followed by Hernandez/Wilkins winning, 6-3, evening the match at 8-8. Orange’s #3 doubles then won, 6-2, leaving Smith’s match versus the Lady Panther’s best player as the final set of the day. Smith pulled off the upset, 7-5 to even the score at 9-9.

When a match ends in a 9-9 tie, all the games in all the sets are counted to determine the winner. When all was said and done, the Lady Minutemen lost five of their sets, 0-6, while Hsieh produced MHS’s only two 6-0 wins. That proved to be the difference.

This marks the end of the careers of seniors Angela Hsieh, Reagan Atallah, Madelyn Hernandez, and Hellen Hong.

Hsieh, a four-year starter and a two-year captain, concludes her illustrious career with a CIF Div. 5 title, two semi final appearances, three Olympic league team titles, two Olympic league Singles MVP’s (106-2 in league, 94 consecutive), four 1st Team All-League selections, two league tournament singles champion and two-time finalist, four CIF Indviduals appearances, and an overall career mark of 210-26.

Atallah, a four-year varsity member, three-year starter, and two-year captain, concludes her career with a CIF Div. 5 title, three Olympic League team titles, a 1st Team All-League selection, and two 2nd Team All-League selections. Atallah hardly played her first year but improved each year to earn her first 1st Team All-League selection this season.

Hernandez, a three-year starter and a two-year captain, leaves as the reigning Olympic League doubles MVP (along with Michael Wilkins), a two-time league tournament doubles champion, a two-time 1st Team All-League selection, a 2nd Team All-League selection, two Olympic League team titles, and two CIF Individuals appearances. She improved each season, going 50-4 in her final two league seasons, and an impressive 12-0 with Wilkins during this year’s playoff run.

Hong is a three-year varsity member. Like Atallah, she started with little ability, but improved each season, eventually breaking out this season to become the league tournament doubles finalist (with Stella Wang), a 1st Team All-League selection, and a CIF Individuals participant. She and Wang posted an impressive 22-4 league mark this season.

Meet Recap

It was like a heavyweight fight, with two evenly-matched teams matching each other blow for blow. The first round ended with a 3-3 tie, the second round in a 6-6 tie, before concluding the third round in a 9-9 tie.

Opportunities were there for both the Owls and the Lady Minutemen to take the match, but each team showed determination and resolve to overcome late-set deficits and pull out victories from the jaws of defeat. Every member of the team contributed key wins for Maranatha, with Angela Hsieh winning two sets, and Malena Smith and Rose Zhang each winning one set for MHS.

The dynamic duo of Maddie Hernandez and Michael Wilkins turned in a monster performance, going 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 and securing the win on games for the Lady Minutemen. The teams of Hellen Hong/Stella Wang and Reagan Atallah/Aria Haver-Hill each won one set.

Meet Recap

Today’s 1st round playoff match-up between the Lady Minutemen and the Lady Cougars had the intensity of a win-or-go-home contest. Beaumont had the opportunity to work out their jitters in their wildcard match yesterday while Maranatha needed to work out theirs today. Nerves were evident on the doubles side as both #1 Maddie Hernandez/Michael Wilkins and #2 Hellen Hong/Stella Wang started tight, going down promptly, 0-3, respectively. Both teams were able to get their bearings and recover to win, 6-4. That would prove to be huge for Maranatha, helping them to a 4-2 lead after the first round.

On the singles side, in a pivotal match-up between the two #1’s, MHS’s Angela Hsieh and BHS’s Summer Reaves, Hsieh roared out to a 5-0 lead before closing out a 6-2 victory. #2 Malena Smith jumped out quickly to a 6-0 victory, not allowing BHS’s #2 to get into her rhythm.

Both teams battled the rest of the way, splitting each of the next two rounds, 3-3. MHS’s #1’s, Hsieh and Hernandez/Wilkins, anchored the way, each sweeping their opponents. Smith picked up another win against the #3, and #3 doubles, Reagan Atallah/Aria Haver-Hill picked up an inspired second set win, 6-0.

Next up for the Lady Minutemen is a road contest against the Laguna Blanca Owls in Santa Barbara on Friday, 11/3.

Meet Recap

In an all-Maranatha affair, both the singles and doubles Olympic League tournament championship matches were filled with Lady Minutemen, with #1 Angela Hsieh facing #2 Malena Smith, and #1 Madelyn Hernandez and Michael Wilkins squaring off against #2 Hellen Hong and Stella Wang. For Hsieh and Smith, it was a rematch of last year’s final.

Both matches were filled with competitive tennis and strong efforts from all participants. In the end, the top seeds prevailed, with Hsieh winning, 6-4, 6-3, and Hernandez/Wilkins winning, 6-4, 6-1.

Today’s matches represented back-to-back league tourney championships for both Hsieh and Hernandez/Wilkins and marked the end of Hsieh’s, Hernandez’s, and Hong’s Olympic League careers.

As the league’s all-time leader in league wins (106), and a two-time singles league MVP, Hsieh also leaves as a four-time First Team All-League selection, and having reached all four tournament singles finals, winning two of them.

Hernandez and Wilkins are the league’s first two-time doubles champions, as well as the first individuals to win the doubles crown twice. They also earned their first doubles MVP.

Hernandez graduates as one of the most prolific doubles players in Maranatha history, garnering two First-Team All–League selections and a Second Team All-League spot to complement her two league tourney titles.

Hong concludes her Olympic League career, having worked her way from the ground up, improving each season, to now make an All-League team for the first time in her career, reaching First Team All-League this season with Wang, and reaching the championship match in the league tournament.

All of the finalists today will represent the Olympic League in the prestigious CIF Individuals tournament on Nov. 20.

But before that is the CIF Team playoffs, which begin with the wildcard matches on October 31. As the top-ranked team in D5, the Lady Minutemen are expected to get an automatic bid into the first round on Nov. 1.
