In their home opener, the Minutemen faced familiar opponent, Tarbut V Torah (TVT), who was in the Olympic League with Maranatha the last two years.
The day’s feature match was the final meeting between the schools’ top players, MHS’s Daniel Guan and TVT’s Ethan Abelowitz, who split their previous 4 regular season meetings (though Abelowitz defeated Guan in the league finals championship match last season). It was a hotly contested, back and forth affair, with each player giving each other his best shot. Neither player backed down, and after an hour and fifteen minutes, the set finally concluded with Abelowitz double-faulting at 5-6, sudden death, giving Guan the 7-5 win.
#2 JP Collins went 1-1 (6-1, 4-6 to Abelowitz), before subbing out for Alternate John Zhang, who lost in a tie-breaker (5-7). #3 Nico Engling went 2-1.
MHS’s doubles squads swept, 9-0, and were led by #2 Billy Tan/Jake Scott, who, along with Alternate, Jordan Miao (who subbed in for Tan in the final set), pulled off a “triple bagel,” 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. #1 Matthew Leiva/Michael Mathews and #3 Kenny Cho/Tim Huang swept 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-3, 6-0 respectively.
Next up for the 2-0 Minutemen is an away match against the San Gabriel Matadors on Tuesday, March 7 at 3:15 p.m.
