In a match that lasted nearly 3 1/2 hours, it came down to the final two doubles sets of the day, with the match squared away at 8-8. When #2 doubles, Georgia Wilder/Amanda Yee, lost their set, 2-6, to the Tigers’ #1 doubles, it looked like the match would end up 9-9, as #3 doubles, Bethany Ang/Stella Hsieh, held a 5-1 lead on Westridge’s #2 doubles, in a match-up of two all freshmen teams. But as they say, it ain’t over ’til it’s over. The Tigers’ team roared back all the way to take a 6-5 lead. Ang/Hsieh responded and tied the set at 6-6 before losing 6-7(3).
The match was in danger of getting out of hand in the first round as the Lady Minutemen found themselves down, 1-4, after #1 doubles, Michael Wilkins/Aria Haver-HIll, and Ang/Hsieh, who were both tied in the middle of their sets, lost . MHS’s lone point at that juncture came as #1 Madison Kane won her showdown with Westridge #1 Caroline Lopez, 6-1. That’s when Wilder/Yee, came from behind to win 7-5 and close the gap. The score after the first round was, 2-4.
The Lady Minutemen evened the overall score at 6-6 after the second round, as #2 Malena Smith and Wilkins/Haver-Hill won their sets, 6-2, 6-1 respectively. Kane won, 6-2, and Wilder/Yee pulled out another comeback (their 3rd of the young season), 7-6(6).
Kane and Wilkins/Haver-Hill contributed MHS’s only 3rd round points, 6-1 and 6-3.
