Maranatha hosted La Cañada on Thursday night, and the matchup had all the drama a high school soccer game could offer. The Minutemen put a goal in the net within the first sixty seconds of play, as Matthew Morales crossed the ball from the left wing to Trey Topalian, whose header beat the Spartan keeper. That scoreline would stand at the break, in spite of several opportunities by both sides. Shortly after the restart, Maranatha earned a penalty kick off a hand ball in the box, but the La Cañada keeper guessed right and blocked it. The Minutemen were determined, and capitalized on an opportunity a couple of minutes later as Matthew Malhotra blasted one into the net. His goal came off a rebound from a shot by Whit Wilder that hit the crossbar. With less than ten minutes left, La Cañada earned a penalty kick off a foul in the box, but Maranatha keeper Reese Turknette came up with a big save, diving to his left to parry the ball out of the net. With just under five minutes to go, the Spartans found the equalizer off a free kick just outside the box that beat both the Minutemen wall and keeper. At the final whistle, the scoreline was level at 2 – 2.
Maranatha is back in action again on Saturday in their final game of the Temple City Invitational Tournament, facing Whittier High School at 9:10am.
