Friday saw the first day of action for Maranatha in the San Gabriel Valley Cup. After a tough draw against Campbell Hall on the road the week before, the Minutemen were eager for a win. The first half was all Maranatha, as the offense thundered past the Griffins for a pair of early goals. The first was in the seventh minute as Whit Wilder connected with striker Matthew Morales who beat the keeper making it 1-0 Maranatha. Five minutes later, Morales found Eric Chang, whose finish put the Minutemen up 2-0. Maranatha was just getting started. With just under ten minutes left in the first half, Morales was played a long ball from Ryan Firestone on the back line, and he found the net again. At the break, it was 3-0 Maranatha. After the restart, it was Firestone again over top, this time to Chang who made the score 4-0. Palmdale Aerospace answered late in the second half with a pair of goals, but the final whistle ended their hopes of a comeback. Maranatha notched a win in the opening stage of the tournament, and a pair of goals each for the dynamic twin strikers: Morales and Chang. They move on to play the next opponent in the group, South Pasadena. Kickoff is at 11:30 on Saturday, December 7th.
