With a chance to pull into a first-place tie with Whittier Christian in the Olympic League, the Lady Minutemen of Maranatha High got the job done in a low scoring defensive battle that went down to the wire. Coach Smalley stated that it was an emotional night honoring seniors, Erica De Guzman and Joelle Battles but the emotion turned into positive energy that lasted the entire night. Patil Yaacoubian led the team in scoring with 12 points and seven rebounds while Naomi Turner came off the bench to spark the team with eight big points and four rebounds. Emily Jordan came back from a facial injury to masterfully quarterback the team while adding seven points, five rebounds and four assists. Merci Turner and Mia Chang led the team in rebounds with eight apiece as they both scored six points as well. Hope Hayashida came off the bench and provided her usual stellar defense that ignited the team and the Lady Minutemen were able to hold onto a 42-40 lead for the win. With only two games left in league play the Lady Minutemen improve to 4-2 in league and 16-6 overall. The win gave Coach Smalley his 98th career victory and the team will be on the road next Tuesday and Thursday versus Valley Christian and Heritage Christian to wrap up Olympic League play, with a chance to garner their first league title in five years.
